We were briefed to design a family garden, that was functional, yet sleek and contemporary.

The kitchen looks out over the garden so the view was really important.

Clipped hedging and pleached hornbeam provide strong architectural lines, as well as screening the station buildings beyond. Within the evergreen framework is soft planting in cool whites and purples.

A multi-stem Amelanchier, under-planted with clipped Buxus, is a sculptural focal point, adding seasonal interest, blossom in spring and autumn colour. Up-lit at night this becomes an art form, casting shadows, on the brick wall.

The lawn is still large enough for the children to play, while the zoned decked terrace provides space for adult relaxing and entertaining.

Textured hand-made planters add interest all year and scented climbers provide a dreamy scent.

Lighting transforms the mood at night, creating a sophisticated ambience.
