Elephant Lane, SE16

IMG_0658 - CopiaA client with a passion for elephants presented us with an unusual brief; to design a garden around an Indian marble elephant, “Nellipur”, they had imported from India.

The garden was to be built above their garage, viewed from both the footpath edging the Thames, and from their kitchen balcony above.

Once Nellipur was craned onto the roof, we positioned her looking out to the river and the city skyline beyond.

With no water supply to the roof, we designed a tough drought resistant tolerant garden, which would provide interest all year round.

The colour of the planting palette change seasonally, inspired by the semi-precious stones inlaid into the

elephant’s marble. Soft evergreen grasses provide movement and taller varieties at the back provide a

screening to the apartments beyond.

It was a pleasure to create a local landmark that is now loved by locals and tourists alike.
